Japan Taro Stem Farming And Harvest - Taro Steam Cultivation

Taro stems are the young leaf stalks, or petioles, of the Taro plant. Often the young, as-yet unrolled leaves and stems are harvested together, and cooked together in vegetable dishes or soups. Taro stems are fibrous, so they must be peeled prior to preparing. The tough outer layer is removed to reveal a more tender stalk within. Taro stems have a slightly viscous texture reminiscent of okra, which is often a desirable texture in south Asian and Indonesia.

  • I'm from Fiji and this is one of our main food. We also eat the leaves and the stalks. Leaves are usually cooked in thick coconut milk and fish can be added to it or omitted. The stalks are usually steamed and then shredded like noodles and cooked slightly or soaked in hot boiling water, drained and rinsed in cold water. Lemon is then added with some spring onion or just onion and salt to taste with a can of tuna or chopped flesh of seashells added. Thick coconut milk is also good with it. For the leaves, you can also add a can of corned beef or mutton. Leaves can also be boiled or chopped and fried. The root too can be cooked

  • In my language we called it 'Baal' (Kuki). I remember we used to cultivate this in our jhum field in the hills. One of my favourite vegetable. The leaves are mostly dried and preserved for off seasons. And the main body parts can be cooked in different ways with fermented fish and beans. I'm the best in cooking this. Hahaha
